New Moon Girls

Hi Everyone!

Today I am not blogging about books...but a magazine instead! The mag is called New Moon Girls, and it is an inspiring, ad-free, non-stereotypical magazine for girls ages 8-15! They also have a social website, where you can create your "room" and put things you've created (stories, poems, photos) in your stuff. It's all moderated too, so if you parents are worried about safety...you can't give out any important information on yourself (email, address and that kind of stuff). The magazine has stories from girls, an Ask a Girl column where girls can give each other advice and a lot of cool articles and different things each mag! Also, girls help put together the magazine! There are about twenty or so girls that are on the Girls Editorial Board (or GEB), and an application comes out to apply for it every once and a while. It has been the most wonderful and life changing magazine for me...and I'm sure any girl would enjoy it!

Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

Hiya There,

I recently read a book called Unpsoken by Sarah Rees Brennan, it's was absolutely GREAT! Kind of creepy...it was the best Gothic Romance Novel I have ever read (At least that I can remember reading). Here is a bit of a description:

Kami Glass has been hearing a voice inside her head since she was a little kid...they've talked back and forth her whole life. She is in love with her imaginary friend and most people think she's weird. But then the old "rulers" of her town Sorry-in-the-Vale, the Lindburns (not sure I spelled that correctly). The Lindburns have two sons...and one of them is achingly familiar. Suddenly Sorry-in-the-Vale is filled with mystery and Kami must uncover what is going on.

I seriously could NOT put this book down...and I am eagerly awaiting the second book (which I've requested at my local library.) This is a must read for any teens (or adults) that love romance, thrill and mystery.

Out of My Mind by Sharon M Draper

Out of My Mind         By Sharon M Draper.

11 year old Melody is probably the smartest girl in her school. She has a photographic memory. Her mind is a constant video camera, recording and recording and recording more. But no one knows, because Melody can’t talk. She can’t walk, she can barely move. She is stuck inside her head. Her parents seem to know she is capable of learning, but her teachers and doctors say otherwise. One school day she and her other disabled classmates starts going to “inclusion” classes. People thing Melody is “weird”. Even her new friend Rose seems to be embarrassed when other kids see them talking. Melody watches her little sister and wonders why she can’t walk, why is it so easy for that little toddler, but she can’t do it? One day her “friend” Rose gets a new computer. Melody starts thinking about her “perfect” computer, one that could help her talk. Her school aid helps her do some research and she finds a computer called the “Medi-talker” her parents get her one and suddenly Melody can talk! She can answer questions in class! The whole world can hear the real Melody. But sometimes, people don’t WANT to hear the real you. Melody can talk, but she still isn’t considered “normal” and she still doesn’t feel included. Then one of her inclusion class teachers announces a state championship quiz that the school does every year. Melody is ready to take on the challenge. She tries out and gets on the team. Her neighbor helps her study and study and study, her team gets past the state quiz and they are moving onto the national quiz in Washington. Melody is so excited she could burst. She was in the newspaper, she is the special one. But her classmates are jealous. They don’t like that Melody is getting all the attention. As the day at the capital comes closer, and finally gets there, Melody might not get everything she wants. This book made me think, it made me cry and smile and every good thing a real book SHOULD make you do. I also made me grateful for the everyday things. To me, walking and talking are simple, but they are really luxuries that not everyone has. This book is definitely worth the read. I give it a 5 star rating (if this were like some kind of professional review.) I hope that everyone sees that this book is not only great, but important too.

Review: Glory Be

Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood is a wonderful book about a spirited 11-year-old girl.

It's the summer that Glory's turning twelve. Everythings supposed to be great. But instead, Glory's beloved community pool closes, her sister has stopped spending time with her, instead she is secretly going out with some boy. Glory hopes the that the pool will open up in time for her birthday on the fourth of July. She's had her birthday party there every year. Things change, when a girl named Laura Lampert comes to town with her Mom, who is opening a Freedom Clinic. Glory likes Laura, but others do not. Her best friend Frankie stops playing with her, because his Daddy says that he's not to play with some "Yankee." Glory is up and determind to figure out what's going on and why. Set back in the 1960's this book was a wonderful work of historical fiction. Glory was a funny, strong and stubborn girl, that everyone will love.

Thanks,

Bookworm Problems: we have them sometimes.

Bookworm Problems:

#1: When you have so many books your shelves are overflowing.
#2: When your friends have more books than you.
#3: You just can't get enough reading time.
#4: The next book in the series won't be out for another year.
#5: a book character dies, you go into a sobbing fit for hours on end.

Review: Turtle in Paradise...

Hi, This is a review for a book I read recently called Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm

When 11 year-old Turtle's mama gets a job housekeeping for a lady who doesn't like kids, she gets sent off to stay with her relatives in Key West, Florida.  In Florida ,Turtle finds, her ragtag boy cousins,  greenery, an unknown relative and maybe even treasure. Set in 1935 during the great depression, this book was funny, interesting and a page-turner. I liked Turtle's character, I felt like I understood her, and her crazy cousins. She is a smart, rather stubborn and funny character with an attitude. This book was a great one and I hope you like it too!

Thanks!
